Psychiatric Advanced Directives:
A Psychiatric Advanced Directive is a living will which allows mental health consumers to have greater control over their treatment when they are in crisis. Psychiatric Advanced Directives are based on the same logic as Medical Directives which people create to give them greater control of end of life care (whether a respirator and other life support is used after brain death is confirmed etc.). One example of the effective use of a Psychiatric Advanced Directive would be a prohibition of shock treatment in the case of involuntary commitment.
